Almirola Signs with Richard Petty Motorsports
Aric Almirola has signed a contract to drive the number 43 Ford Fusion for Richard Petty Motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Last season Almirola drove the number 88 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports in the second-tier Nationwide Series finishing 4th in the final standings, 127 points behind champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
The number 43 car is the most famous car number in all of NASCAR. Almirola’s new boss Richard the King Petty Image: http://www.aricalmirola.com won 7 championships and 200 races driving the number 43 car. Since the King retired in 1992, the number 43 has not visited victory lane in the Sprint Cup Series. This ride became available when AJ Allmendinger was signed to drive the number 22 for Penske Racing replacing former champion Kurt Busch who signed with James Finch to drive the number 51 Chevrolet.
Aric Almirola has worked for RPM before – at the end of the 2010 season for the last 5 races when the team released Kasey Kahne to drive for Red Bull Racing. Almirola has other Cup experience in 2008 when he drove for another famous team Dale Earnhardt INC., a team founded by another 7-time Champion, the late Dale Earnhardt. Almirola was a victim of a struggling economy and was released due to lack of sponsorship. He then spent 2 seasons in the Camping World Truck Series driving for Billy Ballew earning the runner-up spot in 2010 to Champion Todd Bodine. This continues a busy offseason in NASCAR’s top 3 series where drivers continue to swap rides just weeks before testing begins for the 2012 Daytona 500.
